Is Sleep Important? The Parents Have Spoken!

In the opinion of America’s parents, sleep is what keeps them and their children sane. The 2014 Sleep in America: Sleep in the Modern Family poll revealed that parents agree that sleep is the motherload of calm and the fatherland of rest. More than 90% of the 1,103 parents surveyed in the study said sleep was either very important or extremely important in their lives and the lives of their little ones.

There are some interesting anomalies, however. For a small segment of the parenting world, sleep just isn’t that important. We’ll break down the numbers for you. Hopefully, by the end of this groundswell of snooze support, you’ll rethink the importance you place on a good night’s sleep. [Note: The average age of the parents surveyed was 42. Only parents with children age 6 or older were surveyed]

Interesting fact #1: Parents surveyed believed that sleep was most important for their child’s performance at school. Of the 1,103 surveyed, 69% see a very important in relationship between school performance and nighttime rest. Only 4% believed that sleep had no bearing on their child’s scholastic success. Interesting fact #2: Parents believe that an absence of good sleep affects their child’s mood more than their own mood. Maybe its the well-groomed ability of parents to function on meager levels of sleep, or maybe it’s a child’s biological need for solid rest. Either way, the parentals have spoken: 55% of them believe that sleep is extremely important for their mood, while 61% believe that sleep is extremely important for their child’s mood. Interesting fact #3: One out of every 10 parents said sleep had no important effect on their mood. A study by Harvard Medical School’s Division of Sleep Medicine will clear up the confusion: Sleep plays a significant role in how you feel. Lack of sleep can lead to stress, anger, sadness and mental exhaustion. Take Harvard’s advice: Happy people are people who sleep. In the coming weeks, we’ll write more about the findings of this year’s Sleep in America study.
